Not the usual walk in the parks

Monday December 11

Despite our jetlag, we duly woke to put our plans for our first walk into fruition. Snow has changed to light rain and London is still freezing.

We started off at our apartment and headed first to Hendon Park. Our plan was to walk through Golders Hill Park and then Hampstead's Parliament Hill view point before hopping on a train from Gospel Oak to Whitechapel for nasi bryani. Rain became sleet and we struggled through slushy Golders Hill. We had made only slightly more than 6km and the weather meant the view point will mean nothing in the billowing snow.

Hendon Station. This is a halfway mark

Thought we wouldn't make it. So near and yet so far, esp in the cold!

Lifesaver cafe at Golders Hill Park

Amazing on a cold day, with hot coffee

We sought refuge in a cafe in Golders Hill. Pat had to thaw his hands, now red from chillbians. It was most worrisome. Of course we compensated for the lack of progress by having coffee and scones with cream.

I had mistaken that my windbreaker could act like a rain coat and suffered 5 hours of cold in near zero temperature. We didn't talk much because we had to work hard to skirt slushy mud.

At 9km, we made it to Hampstead station. The overground was suffering severe delays and we ditched Gospel Oak. In any case,it was a easy ride from Hampstead to Whitechapel.

Not the cheapest or the best and the toilet didn't work but OK
Snow in downtown London has melted
We did not eat the 2 GBP nasi biryani as planned but came close. Now past 1pm, we were siated but cheered as the rain has stopped. Snow has melted and walking downtown became an easy task. We made it to One New Change but the viewing terrace was closed due to the weather. All was not lost because I bought a lovely pair of ankle boots at Office there.

Back at Colindale, we did our major marketing at Morrisons, some one km away. Dinner was unremarkable as I was unfamiliar with the kitchen appliances. A quiet dinner and shortly sleep overcame us. Our bodies are still on Singapore time and hopefully that will change very soon.
