Bye bye time to kiddo and a long trip home

Sat 23 December

The holidays have finally come to an end. We have seen London covered in snow, sleet and its winter grey gloom.

Staycity Hayes has been a great place for the second half of the holiday. Other than being near public transport and great as a base for exploring west London,it is not the place most folks will have  heard about when they venture out of London.

We fed kiddo brunch for the last time and then saw her scoot off to London at the train station. Pat and I aimlessly walked up and down Hayes town, and only getting into cafes twice to get away from the cold and rest our feet. It was Christmas shopping frenzy and Lombardy Retail Park was jam packed with cars unable to find a place to park.

We walked the entire length of Coldharbour Lane, and beyond Staycity to Asda. There was a lot to love about the food there and mostly cheaper than Singapore. It was unfortunate we could not cart a lot back home.

At 4.30pm, so bored with aimless drifting, we hopped up 140 for Heathrow, lugggage, backpack and all. It was a very short ride. Pat did the uncharacteristic thing and asked an airport personnel for directions. It was a bit of walk through the basement from we we alighted, where we took the free the Heathrow Express to Terminal 4.

Malaysia Airlines has opened the counter 4 hours ahead of flight time, which made us very delighted. Checkin was not exactly fast with only one counter staff for online checkin customers and another for those who did it the old fashioned way.

We cleared security and went for a long, lovely meal at The Commission. Food was very good, and so was the service. There was plenty of places to sit. Perhaps the extra VAT put many off but with 3 hours to spare, it was a good place to languish.

Our flight departed on time, this time with a whole planeload of people. I was not sure if 39000 feet was considered low but the ride home was bumpy. In my sleepy stupor, I was not bothered and thanked God so far everything had been uneventful. I watched 4 or 5 movies, napping in between. MAS had limited movie choices but enough for a 13 hour flight if I was not fussy.

On schedule at 6.25pm, we touched down at KLIA. Pat was queasy and I had a 'lonely' salad dinner that Christmas eve at Dome while he just had tea. Our brains were stupefied from lack of sleep. There was a 30 minutes delay and then at 12.10am, a whole planeload of us were Singapore bound.

Another long commute by taxi back home cost us $38 odd dollars. We managed to hit the sack by 2am. The cuppacino at KLIA kept me awake and I spent an hour of less cleaning the floor and doing laundry in the semi dark so as not to wake up Pat.

At this point of time, I would say no more holidays until I have forgotten the long commute and transit and endless laundry. Perhaps then I will pore over the maps and consider our next adventure.
